Acquiring Information for Understanding

Given the ever-changing nature of technology, it is important that we provide students with an adaptive environment in which they learn to identify the information they need; develop strategies for seeking this information; learn how to acquire it; and practice analyzing, organizing, processing, and presenting this information as part of their school work.

The librarian and academic technology teachers work together with the administration, classroom teachers, and specialists to develop curriculum and provide supporting materials that help students become successful learners and develop critical thinking skills. By 4th grade, students are expected to have solid critical thinking skills, including the ability to distinguish fact from fiction and also to be capable researchers.

One fixed component of the elementary technology program is keyboarding. In 2nd grade, students are introduced to the fundamentals of proper keyboarding. In 3rd and 4th grades, students spend more sessions practicing typing for fluency, accuracy, and speed.
