Student Council
Elected officers, along with a broader group of “cabinet members,” meet weekly to give voice to the student body, and to plan and execute student-led social and community events, such as dances, fundraisers, and the student store. The Student Council also takes responsibility to fundraise for and administer the Alumni Action Award in partnership with the Office of Advancement.
Cross-Campus Buddies
Our middle school students love meeting with their elementary school buddies! In addition to maintaining an ongoing cross-campus correspondence with their buddies, the groups meet several times a year to lead each other in activities based on community-building themes in a variety of curricular areas. Eighth graders are especially paired with kindergartners to remind them of being the newest student in a school as they prepare to move on to new schools themselves.
Families
Eighth graders lead these cross-grade groups that meet several times a month to engage in activities centered around the school’s social emotional health themes of Caring for Ourselves, Caring for Others, Integrity, and Diversity/Inclusion.
Assemblies
Eighth grade students are invited to sign up to host an assembly. This is a great opportunity for students to practice their public-speaking, planning, and presentation skills.
Electives
Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to teach their own electives! After taking a one-trimester course on writing lesson plans and developing teaching strategies, the students spend the next trimester teaching a class to their peers in the discipline of their choice. Leadership opportunities also exist in other electives such as Carrotmob, a form of consumer activism that allows students to reach out to the community by asking businesses to “go green.”
