I hope that you are in the midst of a warm, relaxing summer, full of rest and fun adventures. Although it seems like a lifetime ago, we are still basking in the glow of a wonderful 2010-11 school year, feeling immensely proud of our most recent graduates, grateful for the incredible TEDx conference that was a huge success, and appreciative of each member of our community who enriches our school.
Our summer crew is keeping Tapscott and Avis bustling with work, exploration, and even some play. Steve and Kate’s Camp has been welcoming campers to Tapscott since June 20. Meanwhile at Avis, our Facilities Manager, Steve Harrington, has been welcoming workers to our middle school campus to complete a new lower yard, to provide an outdoor classroom, updated basketball and four square courts, and a large green turf. And, of course, our busy office staff and administration are preparing for your children’s return on the first day of school.
For those of you who have a little time on your hands this summer, I cannot pass up the opportunity to share some book recommendations (as usual!) Part of my graduate research years ago was on the difference between boys and girls, and I’ve renewed my interest in this topic. I would recommend local author Peggy Orenstein’s Cinderella Ate My Daughter; Orenstein is coming to Prospect Sierra as one of our Parent Forum speakers this year. If you want to delve into The Minds of Boys, pick up Michael Gurian and Kathy Stevens’s book of the same name.
A non-fiction junkie, I also really loved Brene Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection — a humble look at the problems of perfectionism (not speaking from personal experience, of course). Finally, if you haven’t already read PS parent Michael Lewis’s The Big Short, don’t wait. Enjoy!
I look forward to seeing you and your children on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 31. Meanwhile, all my best wishes for the remainder of your summer vacation!
